History

10-10 History

Seldom does the story of an organization’s founding outlive the memory of those who founded it. The members who come after search diligently among the mitten and potsherds of notes and fragmentary minutes for their beginnings, often in vain.

So is it rapidly becoming with the 10-10 International Net. To those who could have recorded it, the work of founding and organizing was only their day to day activities- the thoughts and impulses of which motivated their acts were normal, familiar processes which needed no recording.

So we grope for much of the story of our beginning. This much is certain: that when the list of founders was set up the name of Irv Hunter, K6PWO, of Glendora, CA stands pre-eminent. The 10-10 International Net is the projection of his thoughts; the 10-10 spirit is the reflection of his enthusiasm; the growth of 10-10 is the fruition of his labors.

Around this man with his idea, there gathered a group who saw hope for ten meter activity with this innovation….and so it was born, but the nursing period was still ahead. To put a date on our history, we must go back to a spring day in March of 1962.

Ten meters had been roaring during the fifties. Then came the sixties and with it a bad case of the doldrums. Lack of good propagation, and the resulting lack of interest, caused many amateurs to abandon ten meters for greener pastures. This mass exodus from the band was cause for concern on the part of a lot of ten meter enthusiasts, for fear that this lack of activity might cause the FCC to consider reassigning this portion of the radio frequency spectrum to some other service. Sometime in 1961, Irv Hunter, K6PWO, started talking about forming an amateur radio organization to promote activity and every day use of the ten meter band. In March of 1962 word got around that a meeting would take place at the San Dimas Canyon Park, near Irv’s home in Glendora, for the purpose of forming such an organization. A picnic lunch was held on a Saturday and several hams from that local area attended….and thus the seed was planted.

It was decided by this small group of stalwarts that the net would meet every day of the week except Sunday at “10:00 am local time…or 1800 UTC. (Aha, ‘see you on Ten at Ten’….a natural’)”. So the name quickly became “10-10 Net”. The frequency of 28.800 MHz was chosen as the primary daytime net frequency.

Certificates were ordered for members and the caption read Ten-Ten Net of Southern California. Although “10-10” appears on the latest corporation papers, no one seems to know just where the often used “10- X” originated. The original certificate included crossed flags at the top, USA and California, and with the exception of the crossed flags, caption and later the world map, the certificate has remained essentially the same for all these years.

As with most organizations, we experienced our share of growing pains. Originally the 10-10 Net was organized for the purpose of activating ten meters. The By-laws and preamble stated that we were a “traffic net”. The 10-10 net was far from satisfying the ARRL standards for a traffic net, so a major decision was made by the officers and members. We became more of a social net with the prime purpose of maintaining activity on the 10 meter band.

Each sun spot cycle brought both high level activity and low level activity depending upon the period of each cycle. During the good part of each cycle, 10-10 continued to grow and soon became International. “Southern California~ was dropped from the name and the official name became The 10-10 International Net, Inc. and was incorporated in the State of California.

This page is dedicated to the Ten-Ten International Net’s Worked All Countries Award. Below you will find LINKS to various text files that are intended to assist in the first time submission for the Basic 25 Countries and any future endorsements for the award. Also, you will find LINKS to other materials that are related to 10-10 and 10-meter DXing.

      • The link below will take you to an application cover sheet that must accompany your submissions for the award or endorsements.

        DX Applicaiton Form (Word Document)
        DX Application Form (Open Document)
        DX Application Form(RTF Format)

      • Here are the rules that need to be followed for either a first time submission or endorsements to the award.

        Countries Award

      • Tips On Application Submission for The 10-10 DX Countries Award Progarm.

In the summer of 2011, the 10-10 Board of Directors approved a change of rules for all 10-10 awards to not require QSL cards.  We follow all of the ARRL DXCC rules but with the exception of not requiring QSL cards, all QSOs must be on Ten meters and requiring the swapping of our names and membership numbers over the air.  A QSL card exception could be required IF information is needed from a QSL card or digital image of the card, whenever a question would arise as to which country was the actual contact made from or some other minor problem that would require an actual look at the QSL.  The awards manager may have a problem identifying the country of the contact since country prefixes have changed since the Countries Award starting date for contacts was in 1975.  DXpeditions usually have many operators and only one may be a 10-10 member who you would need to contact to get credit.  Most all DXpedition callsigns do not have a 10-10 number and do not count for credit.  Find the member.

You must use the proper forms as posted on the 10-10 website or from an approved computer program that produces a printed output for submitting for the award and all information.

Remember that the 10-10 contact is on the honor system. You know if you exchanged numbers with the station or not.  Before the 2011 rule change, if you got a QSL card that does not have the 10-10 of the operator printed on it, there is nothing wrong with you writing the 10-10 number on your QSL card for the contact.  It‘s your card and if you swapped numbers, record the event for future award credit.  Also record it in a paper log or a computer logging program.

Please understand that Ten-Ten International and the ARRL have adopted a policy of “ZERO TOLERANCE” where it concerns cheating on Awards.  Never try to alter or change a QSL card because a DX station or manager made a mistake on it.

There is NO fee for the Basic 25 Countries Award or future Country Bar endorsements.  For a Bar endorsements by regular mail, all you need to do is send an SASE with enough postage for return of the Bar sticker and paperwork.  The Basic 25 Countries certificate needs a big tube for return mailing and 10-10 is paying the postage.  If your application is by email, then your paperwork is returned by email without a Bar sticker.  Just go to the 10-10 website for more forms.  The endorsements after the Basic 25 Award are in increments of 10 countries until you reach the 75 endorsement, then they are in groups of 5.  For example: 35, 45, 55, 65, 75, then 80, 85, 90, 95, 100 etc.  You can send as many countries as you like at one time to get you to the next  higher Bar award.  You can also send in extras contacts towards the next Bar endorsement.  For example; you might decide to send 41 cards to start, 25 of them will be credited toward the Basic 25 Countries Award plus the 35 Bar, and the other 6 will be in your file toward the 45 endorsement. Then, you need only send 4 contacts to get credit for the 45 Bar endorsement.

One last item: per rule #5, computer printouts like EXCEL are okay.  Use the format which is used on the submission sheet: CALL, COUNTRY, MMDDYY, & 10-10#. Make sure that you attach a copy of the Application cover sheet to your computer generated printout.  If you have any questions about the 10-10 DX award program, please drop me a note by email.

NOTE: Your 10-10 Dues Do Have To Be Paid For Any 10-10 Award!  No Dues = No award.

QSL Bureau

10-10 International - QSL

Welcome to 10-10 International, please select any item from the menu below

1-1 QSL Bureau

10-10 International offers a QSL service to all 10-10 members whether membership is current or not. The QSL Bureau service is for pasteboard QSL's only and is not a forwarding service and does not handle electronic QSL cards. Also, the receiving station must also be a 10-10 member. 10-10 DX members may also participate in this program.

To use the 10-10 QSL Bureau, you must have SASE's (self-addressed-stamped-envelopes) on file with the QSL Manager. The envelopes MUST be #10 size (9 1/2 x 4 1/6) with your CALL legibly printed on the upper left hand corner with one first class stamp attached. All other sizes present a filing problem and will not be used. If you do not wish to receive cards through the QSL Bureau, please let the QSL Manager know. Your call will be placed on the Non-Participating list. Cards will be held for 2 years, and if no one claims them they will be destroyed. No notice is sent for unclaimed cards.

When submitting cards to the 10-10 QSL Bureau, you must have them sorted in numerical order if there are more than 20 cards, i.e., W1ZZZ, K3RRR, WA6YYY, AB7TT, ZP9GG, ETC. There is no need to sort by prefix, however a sort by suffix is helpful. Remember, sort by the number in the call. QSL cards for portable or mobile operations should be sent to the home call, i.e. W6OI/1, W6OI/2 should go to W6OI. The QSL Manager will mail cards every 90 days. If there is only 1 card in an envelope, it is held for 120 days.

If you have questions, please refer them directly to the QSL Manager. The program may be modified from time to time in the interest of economy and efficiency and a progress report will be made in the 10-10 News.

When you receive cards from the 10-10 Bureau, it is your responsibility to verify the claimed QSOs in your log. It is not the intent nor responsibility of 10-10 to validate the claimed QSOs. If a claimed QSO is not found in your log, you may return the card to the sender through the 10-10 QSL Bureau, but please attach a note stating the contact is not in your log. In light of recent events, it is recommended you closely check all QSL cards you receive through any QSL Bureau.

Awards

Official 10-10 Awards and Their Requirements

NOTE: The following is a listing of general rules and requirements for ALL 10-10 award programs. Rules and requirements specific to an individual award are included with the description of each individual award.

Program Description

10-10 sponsors a program of operating awards. Each award is administered by a volunteer manager who provides applicants with the award rules, application forms, certification of applicant’s submission, and issuance appropriate award or upgrade. As of 2000, 10-10 authorizes the following operating awards:

Specific requirements for each award regarding qualifications, procedures, and the name of current award managers are provided in the individual award descriptions.

Uniform Qualifications

Applications for all awards are subject to the following uniform general qualifications and procedures.

Membership:

To apply for any 10-10 award, proof of full (paid-up) membership is mandatory. A copy of a current membership card or the address label from the latest copy of 10-10 News will satisfy this requirement. Proof of membership must be sent with each application for any award.

Rules and Application Forms:

An application form, listing the rules for each award, is available from the specific awards manager. Requests for application should be sent to the specific award manager and must be accompanied by a #10 (business size) stamped, self-addressed envelope (SASE). In the case of DX requests, send enough funds to cover return postage. Requests for applications can also be emailed in lieu of snail mail to the respective awards manager. Members are requested not to telephone awards managers to request forms or rules. Awards/certificates that require only listing of information without specific application forms include the Bar awards and the VP certificate. All other 10-10 awards/certificates require an application form.

Special Note: Certain key forms are available in both HTML and in PDF formats from the link indicated. The advantage of the PDF format is that it prints correctly without trial and error. However, it does require that you have a copy of Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0 installed: the program is available free from http://www.adobe.com/acrobat. Many of the forms were constructed by Bob Munro, W1AMF.

Award On-The-Air Contacts:

A legal 10-10 contact must be a two-way contact exclusively on ten meters. A legal contact consists of the call, 10-10 number, name, date, and QTH (state or country). At no time is it acceptable for a 10-10 number to be relayed via a third station. These requirements for a legal 10-10 contact have been affirmed by the Board of Directors.

Defective Applications:

Should the applicant fail to send proof of current (full) membership, the Award Manager will hold the application and send the applicant a standard form letter indicating what is needed to permit award or upgrade processing. If the application is defective with respect to the specific award requirements, the Award Manager will return the application with a brief explanation.

Handwritten or Computer Applications:

For all 10-10 awards, legible handwritten, typed, or computer printed applications are acceptable.

Award Costs:

All awards are free to paid members. This includes all basic and any upgrades (as appropriate).

QSL Confirmation:

QSL confirmation is NOT required for any awards.

New Awards:

In accord with a policy decision of the Board of Directors, the effective date of all new 10-10 awards will be 120 days after the publication date announcing the availability of the award. All applications received by the award manager prior to the effective date of the award will be held and award numbers will be drawn by lot.

Daily Nets

10-10 Daily Nets

10-10 holds daily (except Sunday) SSB nets at 1800Z on 28.380 MHz.

The purpose of the Nets is to promote activity and good operating practices on the 10-meter amateur band, and to assist radio amateurs in improving their technical skills and operating procedures. The Nets also provide a means for members to make contacts, and to recruit new members. The Nets are open to all radio amateurs worldwide.

Net operations are organized and overseen by the Net Manager who is responsible to the Operations Committee. In addition to serving as a Net Control Station (NCS), in the rotation of the Nets, the Net Manager attempts to check in to as many Nets as possible to render assistance to the NCS on duty and to fill in for NCS who may be unable to perform his/her duties due to unforeseen circumstances.

Check-in Procedures and Rules

10-10 Nets operate in accordance with appropriate net procedures for the orderly check-in of stations and the exchange of routine 10-10 information. Each session of the Net will have an NCS who is responsible for maintaining good order on the Net.

Recommended Method for Check In

A station wishing to check-in to the Net should wait until he/she hears the NCS call for check-ins. A station that has been acknowledged by the NCS should give information, to include call sign, name, state or country, 10-10 number and VP number. Stations do not need a 10-10 number to check in. All stations are welcome. The Nets are a great place to learn about 10-10 and its various activities. Frequently a station can work the ten stations necessary to qualify for a 10-10 number. After a station has joined the Net, he/she should not contact any other station unless the contact is first sanctioned by the NCS. The NCS will provide ample opportunity for all stations checking in to work other stations on the Net.

The Net Manager is Stephen, W7WHB, #77836. Please contact Stephen if you have questions about Net operations or might like to serve as a NCS. The daily nets are an excellent place to listen and learn about net procedures.
