Beacon Receiver Online

At http://75.64.164.187/, one will find an online Beacon Band receiver. It's a Software Defined Radio.

It is operated by W5ZA ... and someone needs to sign him up for Ten-Ten. <G>

This is a WebSDR Receiver located in Shreveport, Louisiana, using experimental software engineered by PA3FWM. This software is not currently publicly distributed.
Equipment currently consists of a single SoftRock Ensemble II receiver feeding a Xonar D1 soundcard, using a 2.4 GHz Celeron computer. Linux OS used is Ubuntu 10.10. No preamp is used. The antenna is a vertical wire dipole, suspended approximately 16 meters from the ground.

A few operational tips:

Enlarging or zooming the screen waterfall display may offer a much easier receiver to tune and monitor. The waterfall display may be functionally enlarged easily by simply increasing the page size on your screen using the zoom feature offered by Windows IE (a button at the lower right hand corner of the screen) and other browsers. Use the "zoom" buttons on the receiver display located beneath the waterfall settings to achieve a very useful "bandspread" function (you may also place the cursor on the waterfall and use the mouse wheel). To see another frequency segment while zoomed in, click and hold on the waterfall itself and slide the display left or right (works in "zoom" modes only). Using narrow bandwidths is much easier when the display is zoomed in. To tune, click on the tick marks immediately beneath the waterfall to go there instantly. To tune smoothly, click and hold immediately below the yellow indicator and slide up or down the band. Frequency may be entered directly in the "frequency box."

Please feel welcome to use the Log feature for logging beacons heard; this record may be used for analysis, so please log only beacons and as many as you like. Currently, using the mouse wheel to open a log for viewing will avoid closing the receiver.

Operation may be intermittent until a remote site is secured. Weather may also intervene due to frequent thunderstorms in this area.
