Ten X DX News
Dec. 1, 1998
Conditions on Ten have improved all over the
world as the solar flux climbs upwards with the
current flux at 163! I just finished working the
CQWW contest with the goal of contacting
countries that I needed for CW DXCC and I found
two new countries on Ten. Higher solar ionization
has allowed me to put five new 10-10 countries in
my logbook since Temotu Island back in April. I
found one ALL time new 10-10 country from
Eritrea E30GA so, the number of 10-10 countries
will increase to 291 with Eritrea! The other four
new ones for me were from Iceland TF5BW,
Libya 5A1A, Slovenia S53EO, and the Czech
Republic OK1JN. Yes, I missed a few 10-10
countries during the last cycle. My latest new 10-
10 was last week when I invited Billi TF5BW
#3714 to meet me on the 28555 weekend DX net.

Iceland: TF5BW Billi #3714 has been the only
10-10 member from Iceland for many years.
Here is his comments: "Hello Mike. Sorry about.
Saturday I completely forgot the schedule but will
try Sunday. I am using Kenwood TS430S
Transceiver and a 3 element Yagi antenna from
Fritzel in Germany. The antenna is about 10
meters from the ground. I have not been active
for the past 3 years but before that I was chasing
DX and amateur radio awards. I have worked and
confirmed 275 DXCC countries and I have 300
amateur radio awards. In February 1994 I took
over as Award Manager IRA the Icelandic Radio
Amateurs Association. In 1997 I took over as
editor for our club magazine CQ TF. In 1998 I
became the Web Master for the IRA Web Page.
Although only about 100 members, this takes
most of my spare time. Most of the members do
live in the capital Reykjavik which is on the SW
coast of Iceland but I live in Akureyri on the north
coast about 430 kilometers from Reykjavik. It is
not a problem to be the editor for CQ TF and live
so far away because most of the material is via
Email. I do not write it myself, I just put it
together, get it photocopied and mail it. 73 Billi "
It took five schedules before Billi and I were
able to make contact and signals were very weak!
Look for him on weekends just before his
sundown at 1500-1600Z on 28555. QSL: Billi
Jonsson, POBox 121, IS-602 Akureyri, Iceland.
E3, Eritrea Africa. Bruce, WD4NGB, reports
that his group completed a DXpedition to Eritrea
in November and the first ever 10-10 activity from
E3 was given out by Vance N5VL #63352
(ex.w5iju), Joe KO4RR #46176, Larry NF6S #
51807 and Elvira IV3FSG #54292. Eritrea
continues to have a border problem with Ethiopia
but tensions have subsided and Amateur radio
licenses are being issued. Nellie XE1CI #45888
did not make the trip. Vance had his TS570 and
Windom antenna ready to start as soon as they
had a license. I worked Vance early which
proved important as Vance had to leave
unexpectedly when his son was injured in a
accident. Please QSL all individual 10-10 and YL
contacts with the person you worked, like E30FA
was Vance, QSL cards for E30GA go to K4JDJ.
They made a total of 35,412 contacts, with 5894
on Ten. Further information and logs can be
checked at the Web site: http://qsl.net/eritrea .
T32, Christmas Island: One afternoon in
September, I heard Chuck T32NCC talking about
sending in his 10-10 application by ship mail. I
called him, told him who I was and promised to
get his 10-10 number back to him via radio. His
mail got to Hawaii and then went airmail to Carol
who assigned #69958. Four weeks later, I found
Chuck on 28480 and I gave him his new number
on Nov. 22nd. Unfortunately a few days later,
Chuck told Bruce KK5DO #65027, that he had
misplaced his new number! Fanning Island, has
no telephone or TV, his TS50 radio runs off two
car batteries and he supports himself by selling
handmade items to the tourist that come on cruse
ships to the island. QSL to: Zoli Pitman HA1AG,
Somogyi Bela ut 18, Gyor 9024 Hungary.

Propagation: Solar flux will range from 135-
185 during the first quarter of 1999. On Nov. 30th,
the Solar flux was 168 the A index 4 and K
index 0, now that Cycle 23 is over one year old,
the flux is on a steady long climb upwards. There
will be a fifty point swing in the flux numbers
during the next three months as more new spots
appear on the sun and the first phase of Cycle 23
will last about two more years. Expect the best
conditions on December 10-12, January 6-8,
February 2-4 and March 2-4! The ARRL Ten

one of the best in five years. For stations in the
Eastern US, expect a 90% chance of DX

Africa. For stations in the Western US, expect
70% chance of DX into Europe. All of the US will
get a 75% chance into Central & S.America.
Sporadic E Layer conditions have diminished in
N.America as the long haul F Layer skip is
dominant. Expect a 5% chance of Long Path into
Asia. Remember the beacons (28.175-28.300)
