Ten X DX News
March 2, 1998
In December 1997, a new 10-10 country was created
as a result of Felix DL8OBC #55519 (ex.N5BC) who
operated the club station 5A1A from Libya along with
other German operators. This club station is the only
accredited Libyan station allowed for DXCC by the
ARRL. The count of 10-10 countries is now 289!
The Germans put on a great DXpedition for this
needed country. I did not work Felix on this trip but
at least ten of you work Felix with the special call
5A2A. After Felix got back home, I contacted him by
Email and got a list of the ten members he worked to
qualified the club station for a 10-10 number. I sent
the application to Carol K8DHK along with the
thirteen dollar DX membership fee and 5A1A was
issued #69222! Everything was sent to Felix who will
get with the trustee of the club station, Mr.Albubaker,
who is expected to visit Felix in Germany during the
June Friedrichshafen convention. Felix will explain to
him about 10-10 so that others can work the club
station for a new 10-10 country. Be aware that this
club station uses other callsigns like 5A2A and
5A21PA, so it will be confusing to ask for a 10-10
number especially from a guest operator who does not
know about 10-10. Good luck with 5A1A.
"5A2A was on 10 meters 12-02-97 Ken ZS6NB and
myself worked him as he has a 10-10#, QSL is via
DL3KDV. He was working Africa and Europe at 1335
when I worked him. 73 Don ZS6AQS #61510".

It is with sadness that I tell you about a DX friend
who I met in 1983 and is now a Silent Key. This lady
was the YL half of the world-famous Colvin
DXpedition team, Iris Colvin, W6QL #21226, she
died February 18 at home in California. Iris aged 83,
was first licensed in 1945 as W6DOD. She and her
late husband Lloyd, W6KG #21227, traveled the
world between the 1960s and the early 1990s,
operating from more than 200 DXCC countries. Lloyd
died in 1993 when they had been married for 55 years
and after having logged over a million contacts
between them. Thanks Iris!

Conditions on Ten Meters continue to improved!
The 1997 CQWW DX contests are over and both the
SSB and CW weekends were very exciting. I worked
a total of 85 countries, 275 contacts and 29 of 40
zones both weekends and all on ten meters.

Propagation: Solar flux will range from 99-135
during the second quarter of 1998. On March 1st , the
Solar flux is 98 the A index 8 and K index 1, now
that Cycle 23 is underway what has happened to the
the Solar flux? Looks like we have had a 6 month lag
in the higher flux levels as compared to the last two
Cycles! Twenty point swings of flux numbers are
expected as new spots appear on the sun and it moves
into what I call the first phase of Cycle 23. This first
phase will last for 2 years. For stations in the Eastern
US, expect a 60% chance of DX propagation to the
East-West path into Europe or Africa. For stations in
the Western US, expect 20% chance of DX into
Europe. All of the US will get a 40% chance into
Central & S.America. Sporadic E Layer conditions
will diminish during the Spring as F Layer skip begins
to return. Remember the beacons (28.175-28.300) tell
you what is open on the band especially 28.200.
British Virgin Island by Dirk VP2VF #63440 had
this to say about the QSO Party: "Cycle 23 definitely
has not started here. Copied 8 US stations during the
contest who were 59. First QSO at 1943 after calling
CQ from1200, Sunday first contact at 1820. Total 9
US contacts and all the rest were Spanish speaking
which made for a long weekend. I am sure that
LU3CT did quite well Sunday with the US one contact
after the other, while the band was absolutely dead to
me. There is always a next time! 73, Dirk, VP2VF"
(Editor: I received the log for Dani LU3CT #68907 in
Argentina and it looks great! Dani had 356 QSO's
with 940 points, he had better propagation than I did
and hope Dani gets First place. Good Luck Dani.)
